1. What Happened?
The 2026 NBA China Games brought the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks to Macao for two preseason contests. The opening game took place on Friday, October 9, at The Venetian Arena, where Houston recorded a 135–117 victory over Dallas.
Kevin Durant was among the biggest attractions for supporters attending the event. Coverage from Macao described fans gathering around NBA-themed displays and activities before moving to the arena for the game. The opportunity to see an established NBA star in person helped make the occasion more than a routine preseason fixture.
Kevin Durant China reception becomes a major talking point
Durant’s reception stood out because the crowd’s enthusiasm was visible both around the event and inside the arena. Supporters wore jerseys, sought opportunities to see players and participated in the atmosphere surrounding the Rockets’ visit.
During the opening game, fans chanted “MVP” for Durant. Sports Illustrated also reported on the reception and Durant’s response after Houston’s win. The reaction demonstrated the recognition he continues to receive from basketball audiences outside the United States.
The crowd’s reaction was not simply about the final score. Preseason games provide teams with opportunities to prepare for the regular season, while international events allow fans to experience NBA basketball in a live setting. For many supporters, watching a familiar player compete nearby is an attraction in its own right.
Durant’s popularity also reflects his long career at the highest level of professional basketball. His achievements, scoring ability and experience have made him a recognisable figure for fans who follow the league across different countries.
Houston starts the trip with a win
Houston’s 135–117 victory gave the Rockets a positive result in the first of the two scheduled games. Dallas, meanwhile, had an opportunity to assess its players and combinations against a Western Conference opponent in an international setting.
Cooper Flagg was a notable performer for the Mavericks, scoring 19 points in 19 minutes, according to coverage of the game. His appearance provided another storyline alongside the attention surrounding Durant.
The result should nevertheless be viewed in its preseason context. Teams use these games to evaluate their preparations, manage playing time and develop on-court chemistry. A victory in October does not determine how either franchise will perform across the regular season.
For Durant and Houston, the wider value of the trip includes preparation, team interaction and engagement with supporters. For the NBA, the event provides an opportunity to bring its players and competition closer to international audiences.
2. Important Details
Who was involved?
The central teams were the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks. Durant represented Houston, while Dallas featured young standout Cooper Flagg and experienced guard Kyrie Irving as part of its roster.
The two teams brought different storylines to Macao. Houston combined experienced players with a younger core, while Dallas was looking to build its identity around emerging talent and established contributors. The international games provided a shared stage for both franchises.
What were the dates and venue?
The opening game took place on October 9, 2026, at The Venetian Arena in Macao. The second game is scheduled for October 11 at the same venue, according to the NBA’s published event information.
Macao is a special administrative region of China. Although the event is commonly described as the NBA China Games, the 2026 contests are being held in Macao rather than in a mainland Chinese city.
That distinction matters for readers looking for venue information or trying to understand where the NBA’s international preseason activities are taking place.
Why did Durant attract so much attention?
Durant has spent many years competing at the highest level of professional basketball. His reputation as a prolific scorer, multiple NBA championships and long list of individual honours have helped him build a following well beyond the cities where his teams play.Kevin Durant China:
His presence also gave supporters an opportunity to see a familiar NBA personality in a different environment. Fans who usually follow games through broadcasts, highlights and social media could experience the event directly.
The enthusiasm in Macao therefore offers an example of how a star player’s reputation can help draw interest to an international sporting event.Kevin Durant China:
How did fans participate?
The event included more than the two games. NBA House, player-related activities, basketball displays and other entertainment helped create a wider programme for supporters.
According to event coverage, fans visited NBA-themed installations and the Larry O’Brien Trophy display before the opening contest. These experiences gave attendees additional reasons to visit the venue area and engage with the NBA brand.
For the league, activities of this kind create several opportunities to connect with audiences. A fan might attend to watch Durant, explore the interactive exhibits, learn more about another team or introduce a younger family member to basketball.Kevin Durant China:
The programme also demonstrates that international sporting events can serve as both competitions and fan festivals.
3. Why Is This News Important?
1. It highlights the NBA’s international audience
The reception for Durant illustrates the NBA’s ability to attract attention beyond its home market. Professional basketball has an international following, and familiar players can become a bridge between the league and supporters who may never attend an NBA game in the United States.
International preseason events give fans a chance to see teams in person without travelling across the world. They also create opportunities for the league to introduce its players and competitions to new audiences.Kevin Durant China:
The NBA announced that the 2026 China Games would reach fans in more than 200 countries and territories through television, digital media and social media. That planned reach places the Macao event within a broader international strategy rather than treating it as an isolated exhibition.
2. It demonstrates the value of star players
The Kevin Durant China story is also a reminder that individual players can help shape the public profile of a sporting event. A star’s presence may influence which matchups attract the most attention and which moments become widely discussed after the final whistle.
Durant’s career gives the audience a clear reason to follow his performances. He has won NBA championships and major individual honours, and he remains a prominent scorer in the league.
However, the popularity of an international event should not be measured only by the attention given to one player. The Rockets’ wider roster, Dallas’s young talent and the quality of the basketball also contribute to the experience.
3. It gives supporters a more personal connection
Watching a player through a screen is different from seeing that player in an arena. Live games allow supporters to experience the speed, atmosphere and communication that are not always fully captured by television coverage.
The gathering of fans around NBA House and the reaction inside The Venetian Arena suggest that the event offered more than a scoreboard and a final result. For attendees, the opportunity to be close to professional players was an important part of the occasion.
Such experiences can strengthen a person’s interest in the sport, encourage younger audiences to play basketball and create memories that extend beyond the game itself.
4. It creates opportunities for younger players
International events can also influence how younger audiences view professional basketball. Seeing established players compete in person may encourage aspiring players to study their skills, decision-making and approach to the game.
Durant’s scoring ability provides an obvious example for basketball fans interested in offensive technique. Meanwhile, players such as Cooper Flagg offer another perspective: the development of younger talent and the transition into the NBA.
These opportunities do not guarantee that attendance will translate into greater participation. However, events that combine professional games with youth clinics can give communities more direct ways to engage with basketball.Kevin Durant China:
5. It supports a broader event experience
The NBA China Games include entertainment, fan engagement and community activities alongside the contests. NBA House and NBA Fan Day are designed to make the programme appealing to people with different interests, including those who want to experience basketball culture beyond the game itself.Kevin Durant China:
Community Impact Week also adds a local dimension, with activities focused on health, wellness and sustainability. The involvement of NBA Cares and Sands Cares connects the event to initiatives beyond competition.
For Macao, a major international sports event can bring together local residents, visitors and basketball supporters from elsewhere. The overall significance depends on how successfully these activities serve audiences and how the experience develops over time.

5. Official Statement / Source
The most reliable starting point for the event schedule is the NBA’s official announcement. In January 2026, the league confirmed that the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks would play two preseason games at The Venetian Arena on October 9 and October 11.
The announcement also described plans for NBA House, NBA Fan Day, youth basketball clinics and Community Impact Week. It identified Sands China as the league’s partner for the event.
Readers can consult the official NBA China Games announcement for the original schedule and event details.Kevin Durant China:
For the opening game’s result and the atmosphere in Macao, Radio Television Hong Kong published a report on October 10 describing Durant’s popularity, the activities around NBA House and Houston’s win over Dallas. Its report also included comments from a fan who had travelled from Heilongjiang province to see Durant in person.
A further account of Durant’s reception appeared in Sports Illustrated’s coverage of the Rockets’ win.Kevin Durant China:
These sources serve different purposes: the NBA announcement establishes the official event details, while independent reporting provides information about the game and the response from spectators.
6. Background / Context
The history of the NBA China Games
The NBA China Games began in 2004. The league’s October 2026 event guide identifies this year’s edition as the 16th NBA China Games, with 30 NBA preseason games played across the history of the series by that point.
The original purpose of taking NBA teams abroad was to provide international audiences with opportunities to experience professional basketball and support the sport’s development in overseas markets. Over time, international events have also become a way to connect live competition with community activities and entertainment.Kevin Durant China:
The series has not always taken place in the same location. The 2026 schedule returns to Macao for a second consecutive year, with both games staged at The Venetian Arena. This provides continuity for the event while allowing the league to develop its local partnerships and fan programme.Kevin Durant China:
The historical context matters because the latest crowd response is part of a longer relationship between the NBA and basketball audiences in China. It is not the first occasion on which the league has sought to bring its teams and players closer to fans in the region.
Why Macao is hosting the games
Macao provides a venue for the two teams to compete and for the NBA to organise related public events. The Venetian Arena is the designated location for both preseason games, while nearby facilities host NBA House and other scheduled activities.
The format allows the organisers to bring basketball, entertainment and fan engagement together during one event period. Supporters can attend a game, visit displays and participate in activities without needing to travel between distant host cities.
The venue also makes it possible to organise the two scheduled contests in one location. That arrangement gives the teams a common setting for their preseason preparation and allows the event programme to continue throughout the week.Kevin Durant China:
It is important not to confuse Macao’s role as host with the claim that the games are being held in mainland China. Macao is part of China but has its own distinct administrative status.
Kevin Durant’s standing in professional basketball
Durant entered the 2026–27 season as one of the NBA’s most experienced and recognisable players. The league’s preview described the season as his 19th in the NBA and his second with Houston, following his move to the Rockets.
His career has included NBA championships, major individual recognition and years of high-level scoring. Those accomplishments help explain why his appearance can attract attention even during preseason basketball, when the standings and championship race have not yet begun.Kevin Durant China:
A player’s reputation develops over many seasons, but it is reinforced each time supporters get an opportunity to watch that player compete. For younger fans, seeing Durant in Macao could make a familiar name from highlights and broadcasts feel more immediate.Kevin Durant China:
His presence also gives Houston an experienced figure as the team works with a mix of established veterans and younger players. The challenge for the Rockets is to translate that experience into consistent performances when the regular season begins.
What preseason basketball can tell us
Preseason games are part of a team’s preparation for the regular season. Coaches use them to assess lineups, review player fitness, build chemistry and give different combinations time on the court.
That means the 135–117 result should not be treated as a definitive measure of Houston’s or Dallas’s eventual strength. Teams may manage minutes differently from how they would in a competitive regular-season game, and their priorities include preparation as well as winning.Kevin Durant China:
For Durant, the opening game provided a chance to play in front of a highly enthusiastic audience while continuing the Rockets’ preseason work. For Dallas, the contest offered experience against a major opponent and an opportunity to evaluate players, including Flagg.
Supporters can enjoy the competition without reading too much into the result. The more meaningful assessment of both teams will emerge over a larger sample of games once the regular season starts.Kevin Durant China:
The wider value of international fan events
Modern sports events often include more than the competition itself. Activities such as player appearances, interactive displays and youth clinics can make a trip more attractive to people who want a complete experience rather than a seat in the arena alone.
The NBA China Games follow this approach through NBA House, NBA Fan Day and community programming. These events can provide opportunities for fans to learn about the league, discover merchandise and interact with basketball-themed experiences.
The wider programme can also help the NBA build connections with audiences who may follow different teams or players. Someone attending primarily to see Durant could leave with greater interest in Houston, Dallas or the NBA more generally.
Nevertheless, the success of a fan programme should be judged by its actual outcomes, not just by its scale. Participation, audience feedback and the quality of the activities all matter when assessing the lasting value of an international event.
7. Reactions and Public Response
Fans show their appreciation for Durant
The response from spectators was one of the most prominent stories surrounding the opening game. According to Radio Television Hong Kong, fans gathered around NBA displays before the game, and Durant attracted particular interest from supporters who wanted to see him in person.
One fan quoted in the report had travelled from Harbin in Heilongjiang province for the opportunity to see Durant. The account illustrates how an international NBA event can become a special occasion for supporters who rarely have the chance to watch their favourite players live.
The “MVP” chants during the opening contest offered another visible sign of Durant’s popularity. Sports Illustrated reported that the player discussed the reception after Houston’s victory.
Durant acknowledges the atmosphere
Postgame coverage reported that Durant appreciated the enthusiasm and respect shown by the crowd. The reception was meaningful in the context of an event that brought NBA players into direct contact with international supporters.
Such reactions should be understood as an individual response to a particular event rather than proof that every fan shares the same preferences. However, the reported chants and the attention around Durant provide concrete examples of the interest he attracted in Macao.
The enthusiasm also extended beyond Houston’s star player. Dallas brought its own established and emerging talent, while the broader event programme gave supporters multiple reasons to attend.
8. What Happens Next?
The next scheduled step is the second NBA China Games matchup between the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at The Venetian Arena in Macao.
The contest offers both teams another opportunity to continue their preseason preparation before the regular season. Houston will look to build on its opening victory, while Dallas will have a chance to respond after the 135–117 defeat.
Durant’s availability for the second game should not be assumed. Readers should check the latest official NBA news and team announcements for confirmed participation information.
Beyond the Macao fixtures, attention will shift towards the start of the NBA regular season. The more important long-term questions will concern team chemistry, player availability, consistency and how Houston and Dallas perform once competitive games begin to shape the standings.
For Durant, the China Games provide both a preseason stage and an opportunity to connect with a global audience. The reception in Macao has already demonstrated that the experience of an international game can be significant even before the regular season starts.
